Jun’s Bio

Jun Funahashi, originally from Tokyo, is a Hawai‘i-based multimedia artist currently teaching ceramics at Chaminade University of Honolulu, Kapiʻolani Community College, as well as at Fishschool. After graduating from high school, she built a successful career as a makeup artist in New York, working on fashion shows and with major publications such as Vogue magazine.

During the pandemic, Jun moved to Honolulu, where she found inspiration and healing in Hawai‘i’s natural beauty. This experience deepened her environmental awareness and significantly influenced her artistic practice. One way she honors Hawai‘i’s rich landscape is by incorporating locally sourced materials into her work.

Recently, Jun discovered a type of local clay, she believed could be suitable for pottery. At the 2025 Raku Ho’olaulea event, she used this clay to create two raku vessels—significant pieces, as few had considered Hawaiian soil viable for ceramics. She continues to explore the possibilities of working with native clay, pushing creative and material boundaries in her ceramic practice.
